My Pouch Vintage Etsy shop has now reopened!
In my online shop, you will find handmade homewares, vintage fabric and trims
Pouch Vintage has temporarily been closed whilst I studied a supporting teaching college course.
I've always loved having an online shop and have been running my business on Etsy since 2007.
I also love making items for my shop, so I've started to stitch again.
There is a fresh batch of Lavender Rabbits and Lavender Owls now listed.

I have sent them to new homes all around the United Kingdom...and across the globe to Australia, the USA and Japan, to name a few.
New vintage fabric colourways will be listed as and when I complete them.
Each owl and rabbit is handmade by me using vintage fabric and filled with dried lavender.

Halloween denim clutch purse and reminiscing about Etsy Street Teams

I started selling on Etsy back in early 2007. Soon after, I joined the Etsy UK Street Team. Back in 2007-2008 the Etsy UK Street Team used to set monthly creative challenges. The theme for October 2008 was 'Halloween'. I made this denim clutch purse featuring a ghost on the front and a felt applique "BOO!" on the inside. I recently found this clutch purse in a box on top of my wardrobe and thought I'd share it again in the run up to Halloween.

Halloween denim clutch purse and reminiscing about Etsy Street Teams

Not long after joining Etsy I received a conversation from Seaurchin, another Etsy seller, saying 'why don't you come into the forums and have a chat?'. From there I learnt about the Etsy UK Street Team & I met some amazing crafty people off the back of it. I have fond memories of our forum chats & crafting challenges. it's hard to believe its been nearly nine years since I first set up my Etsy shop.

Street Teams are designed to help sellers connect with other members. Sometimes there is a geographical connection, such as the team based in the United Kingdom, sometimes it's a shared skill such as crochet or ceramics.

I still keep in touch with a small group of the original Street Team members. In fact, I recently met up with Lisa from Seaurchin and Laura from Lupin Handmade in Bristol for lunch and a chat. I often see other members of the original Street Team popping up on Twitter & Facebook. I have kept in touch with Sally from Tinkering Textiles, Kirsty from Paperfish, Laura from Laura Fallulah, Lu from Summersville, Megan from Mr.PS and Christine (or Pink Christine as she was known on Etsy), she now blogs about her ex-pat life over on Pinwheels and Stories. We've witnessed many milestones together, such as marriages, arrival of babies, business successes, relationship heartaches & even a move to the United States.

I'm grateful that Etsy bought these people into my life. The UK Street Team also gave birth to the UK Handmade online magazine, which I still write for along with other Etsy Alumnae from the Street Team. Although many of us have moved onto pastures new work wise, we all still have a love of the creative community & still find time for crafting in one form or another.

The Etsy UK Street Team still exists, you can find out more here.

Etsy also recently celebrated 10 Years of Etsy Teams.

Four years of selling on Etsy

May 14th (this Saturday!) marks the 4 year anniversary of my very first sale on Etsy

So to celebrate I am offering free shipping on all orders for 48 hours over my anniversary weekend. All you have to do is enter the discount code 4YEARS at checkout. This offer will run from 8am (GMT) Saturday 14th May to 8am (GMT) on Monday 16th May.

I honestly can’t believe I have been selling on Etsy for 4 years, the time has just flown by. I also can’t believe that when I stumbled across Etsy in 2007 whilst reading Susie Bubble’s blog Stylebubble that it would become such a big part of my life

Pre-etsy I had been trying to sell my handmade bags at craft fairs, I had found it a disheartening experience as I was often faced with people who weren’t my target market tutting at my prices and making me feel about two inches tall. When I found etsy, it helped me to realise that you don’t have to undervalue your work and that there are people out there who will pair a fair price for unique, handmade goods.

Since opening my Etsy store in 2007 I have sold vintage fabric bags, homewares and accessories to 100s of people around the globe. I have received lots of positive feedback and my confidence in my products has grown. Over the past four years I have expanded the Pouch range to include not only bags, but belts, clothespin bags, vintage trims, lavender filled hearts, owls and rabbits. The latter have turned out to be one of my best selling products and I am constantly on the look out for bright and bold vintage fabric to craft even more owls and rabbits!

The biggest plus-point about Etsy is that it is not just a selling venue, it is a community. Through Etsy I have met many designers and crafters from around the world and in the UK. Most importantly, I have formed friendships with a small circle of like-minded crafters who offer me support and advice about selling, designing and also the occasional life-related dilemma. I have even met a number of my fellow crafters in ‘real life’. Most recently Lisa from seaurchin and Laura from Lupin Handmade visited my home city of Bristol and we enjoyed a cup of tea and a chat.

In my life, alot has happened in the past four years, I have got married and most importantly I have become a mum for the first time in 2009. To say my daughter has changed my life would be something of an understatement. My priorities have changed and I no longer want to work in my old job – I want to be able to make an income through crafting. It offers me flexibility as a Mum to a young toddler and job satisfaction because I am doing something creative, which motivates me more than any other job I’ve had.

I think my Etsy store has changed dramatically since I first opened in 2007. I have learnt loads and have worked hard developing my products and honing my photography skills. I am proud of the way my online store looks today, although there’s still lots to learn. There are so many talented designers on Etsy, that you have to continually raise your game to try and keep up!

So, here’s to the next four years!

Don’t forget, free shipping on all orders over my anniversary weekend, just use the code 4YEARS to claim your discount. Please visit my store here

If you are new to etsy, or are unsure how to use discount codes, please see this helpful etsy guide

eco craft & design feature: Chakra Pennywhistle

This is the first in a new series on interviews with eco crafters from across the globe. As part of the Eco Etsy Team, I have met many talented people dedicated to creating items which cause as little impact on the planet as possible. These interviews offer me the chance to showcase some of the fantastic talent to be found in the team.
Don't forget to search 'teamecoetsy' when looking for eco friendly products on etsy

First up is the lovely Rikkianne of Chakra Pennywhistle!

Name: Rikkianne Van Kirk

Shop Name: Chakra Pennywhistle

Shop Link(s): www.chakrapennywhistle.etsy.com

Location: Tucson, AZ USA

Ships To: Everywhere

What do you create?
In my shop, you will find organic cotton pillows, organic onesies and tees, along with recycled money bag pillows and wallets.

How did you get into your craft?
Oh Goodness, that is a long story. I will try and make it short. I have always enjoyed art in all of its forms. I started out in performance art and actually went to a dramatic arts school in NYC. I guess that I got caught up in just living in the city and basically trying to pay the bills and art just became nonexistent. With acting on the back burner, I eventually found myself in need of a creative outlet. I went through countless mediums! Collage, painting, knitting, felting, and finally sewing. I received a sewing machine as a gift and never looked back. I recently took a screen printing course and think that I have finally found my true passion.

What materials do you use for your eco friendly products?
I use organic fabrics along with recycled materials.
Currently in my shop you will find organic cotton pillows that are hand printed with waterbased ink. I stuff the pillows with raw organic cotton and sew them with organic cotton thread. The thread is a joy to use. It is smooth and very sturdy.
I also make pillows out of vintage money bags. These are so much fun to transform! Each one is unique in the fact that they were once working bank bags and carry the wear and tear of their past life.
I also collect and make goods out of vintage calendar tea towels.

Why did you decide to make eco friendly products?
I have always found pleasure in making something new out of something old. I also feel the need to support forward-thinking businesses and, specifically, those that incorporate organic farming. Speaking of something old turned new, there is a quote that I love which comes from an organic farmer….
“Organic farming is rediscovering old techniques, and applying them with a new plough.” La Rhea Pepper
There is something to be said for businesses that do their part to create a sustainable future. No matter how small a part I may get to play in this future, I have the opportunity to use eco-friendly materials and choose to do so….

What inspires you?
A lot of things. My husband, daughter, and grandma are constant sources of inspiration.
I am also obsessed by both folk and outsider art. I just finished reading the book, The Folk Art Tradition, Naïve Painting in Europe and the United States. The author, Jane Kallir describes folk art to be a “catchall category for misfits – wallflowers at the dance of western civilization.” I swear, I have read that sentence over and over! Amazing!

Is this a job for you or a hobby?
I would say that it is both.
I stay at home with my daughter, Mia. She is 2 years old. When she was born, my husband and I decided that I would take care of her and start my business. We planned on giving it 5 years (until Mia goes to school) to see where I could take it.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I spend time with my family and friends. I go thrifting and antiquing quite often. I read mostly art and design books. I go to our local used book store every single weekend and look for issues of Selvedge Magazine for half the price :)

Do you have any advice to share on how you have made your business grow?
I am so thankful for my customers. I treat them how I would want to be treated.

I really try to have fun with it! I am addicted to making Etsy treasuries and recommend everyone to curate! The collections are so inspirational!

Join a team. I am so proud to be a member of Eco Etsy (teamecoetsy) and my local team, the Desert Indie Designers. I have learned so much from both of those groups and enjoy the people so very much.

I support handmade wholeheartedly.

I also think that it is important compliment someone else’s work. If you love another shop, convo them and let them know. We are usually one person in our workshop, sewing room, or corner of the living room. We all belong to a giant community of like-minded people. I think that we tend to forget that the person behind that amazing shop is just like us. Etsy is extremely inspirational - not only in the creations it offers, but in the community it offers as well.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Oh my…. I would love to be living out in the country supporting my family on my income, alone. It would be a complete dream to work with my husband and get to spend every waking minute with him, my daughter, and my grandmother.

Vintage Haberdashery Finds

We've had a bit of a bad start to 2008 when my Mum fell down the stairs, knocked herself out and broke her collar bone. I've been staying with her on and off over the past fortnight . She lives on her own and can't use one arm, plus she had concussion and couldn't be left alone. She's getting a bit better, but wont be able to drive or use her arm for at least 6 weeks.
When I pop out to get my Mum milk or a paper, I can't resist going into her local charity shops at the top of her road. One of them has a huge haberdashery counter with loads of little drawers and each one is full of threads, buttons, belts, buckles and everything else you can think of! I am absolutely hooked and it takes me about an hour to get some milk...
Here are some of the vintage haberdashery finds I've got my hands on :)

New addition to my fabric collection!

messing about with flickr tools

This is the latest addition to my vintage fabric collection. I just couldn't resist buying it as the colours are so vivid. The photos I have taken do not do it justice and the amazing royal blue colour does not show up well in these photos. Even so, you can still see that it is pretty funky!
They just don't make fabric like they used to :)

Sleepy Owl voted into the top 5 'Best Handmade Gifts' on Makefive

Photobucket
Photobucket

Makefive is a new social network website where anyone can make a top five list and then discuss it with the MakeFive community:
"This is what MakeFive is about: an easy to use venue that gets us all talking with one another and making new connections. Users create simple “top 5” lists for anything that they are interested in, and then share their selections with others. This proves a nice entry point to discussions and connecting with like-minds.

We believe our users to be from many walks of life. Here, you can find like-minds from around the corner, or around the world. Perhaps you'll share some thoughts on a good band, or maybe you'll debate politics. What MakeFive users get out of all of this is a little meaningful fun. We've like to see MakeFive as the "thinking person's social network."

Etsy press page

I've just read about the Etsy press page which is located on the Etsy blog.
I clicked through to read about Etsy press and I really like the video featuring the founder of the site, Robert Kalin explaining the ethos behind Etsy.
Go check it out, the video is really informative and I totally agree with Etsy stance on trying to bring non-mass produced items to general public

Showcase November

Showcase November
Originally uploaded by pouch_designs

I took the plunge and bought a showcase spot on Etsy. Although people have not been happy about the increase in price ($15), You've got to speculate to accumulate as they say!
If it doesn't have much effect on traffic to the shop then I wont try it again, or I may try again in the Spring :)
It did give me a chance to spruce up the shop and make sure all the pictures were as good as I could make them. I think I aimed to make the items look more unified, for example, all the peg bags now face in the same direction. I know it sounds a bit OCD-ish, but I know how important good photos are on Etsy, so I didn't want the shop looking like a right muddle.
Since starting on Etsy, I have taken on board lots of advice and looked at loads of other shops. The message has got through to me loud and clear that good photos are key.
I used to sell on Ebay with the bags placed on plain white backgrounds, cut-out and manipulated in photoshop, now I use natural settings with natural light, with props such as antique chest of drawers and a neutral cloth underneath.
I am pleased with the overall effect now, there's still room for improvement, but it's good to keep learning and thinking of new ideas for photos and products.
I'm still enjoying the Etsy experience and that's the most important thing!
