Fun making upcycled Easter hats at the Children's Scrapstore

I'm a huge fan of the Children's Scrapstore. I wrote a feature about them for UK Handmade back in the Summer of 2013. I love the ethos of taking varied scrap materials collected from local businesses and using it for creative play.

We often visit the Scrapstore on a Saturday morning & love spending time rummaging through the scrap. Children are encourage to create something on a particular theme, like robots or sea creatures. Last Saturday it was Easter hats.

There's so much to love about the Scrapstore, lots of large tubs filled with brightly couloured fabrics, stickers, card and foam. Magoo can never resist throwing herself on the neon netting in glee, it's a visual feast for any child's eyes.

Once we'd had a look round, Magoo got to work with cardboard, pens, glue & shiny paper. She made a natty rabbit-hat with decorated ears, a foam nose & googly eyes.

I also had a go at making a rabbit-hat. I used cardboard, foam and strips of the neon netting Magoo loves so much.

Only thing was, I got my measurements a bit wrong & it's too small for my head. It's even too small for Magoo's head. So teddy had to model it!

New listing: apple green lavener rabbit

There has been a serious lack of 'new listings' in my online stores recently. With all the stress of trying to move house and look after a lively toddler, I just don't have the time to get any sewing done. I'm starting to feel slightly 'cold turkey' about it all, my fabric is in the loft, my machine is in the loft and all signs of sewing mess have been cleared away to make our house look as pristine as possible.

So when a good friend of mine kindly gifted this amazing apple green vintage fabric to me, I had to get the scissors and thread out and make a new batch of rabbits! I adore the geometric pattern on this fabric and the colours just pop right out at you.

New colourway! amber and chocolate

I've just listed these lovelies in my Etsy and Folksy stores, a brand new colourway - amber and chocolate!

Made with vintage fabric in my absolute favourite colour combination, brown and orange - it's the two colours that scream 'vintage' whenever I'm sourcing new fabric. I think most of my clothes were brown in the 70s and I remember asking my Mum when I was little, 'why is everything in our house brown mummy?' and the answer I got was 'because it's fashionable'!

This gorgeous fabric came my way via Sally at Tinkering Textiles, also something of a vintage fabric aficionado!

Hope you like them! Lavender rabbit in amber and chocolate

Lavender Rabbits: new colours and work in progress

Photobucket

Summer is traditionally a fairly slow time sales wise on sites like Etsy and Folksy. Rather than panic about sales, it is better to use this 'quiet' time to build up stock for the Autumn and Christmas sales period. I have recently sourced some fantastic vintage fabrics and I have been filling my evenings with sewing lots of lovely rabbits and owls.

One of my favourites is this spirograph style vintage fabric in yummy citrus shades. I'm looking forward to finishing this batch and getting some photos taken.

I have already added two new colours to my etsy shop. First up are these bold lime zest rabbits

New listing: Lavender rabbit in zesty orange

Photobucket

I've been working on some lavender rabbits in two new colourways.
This bunny is made with one of my favourite vintage fabrics.
It features a retro floral pattern in shades of zesty orange and lemon yellow.

Each rabbit is made from recycled, vintage fabric
Its ears are filled with chemical-free, French lavender
Lavender makes a great eco-friendly alternative to conventional moth balls which are full of hazardous chemicals

I will be listing another new colorway soon, in turquoise and aqua blue, watch this space for details ;)

New listing and Vintage Find

Photobucket

I've recently added a two new Lavender rabbits in warm amber orange. This particular colourway proved to be very popular and the first batch sold out last month. Each rabbit is made from recycled, vintage fabric. Its ears are filled with chemical-free, French lavender.

I've also just purchased this vibrant piece of vintage fabric which is earmarked to make more lavender rabbits and owls

This type of vintage, open-weave, man made fabric is becoming harder and harder to source. I find it is perfect for the lavender rabbits and owls because it is just the right thickness and the colours are normally very bright, even 30-40 years after its been manufactured.

It certainly feels like it, the sun is out and the garden is bursting into life.

Did you know?
Lavender is a good moth repellent.
Lavender makes an eco-friendly alternative to conventional moth balls which are full of hazardous chemicals

You can either place them on your pillow or dressing table to help you float off to sleep. Or hang in your wardrobe to make your clothes smell nice, perfect when spring cleaning. They also make a great eco-friendly Easter or Mother's Day gift.
