Share your craft projects on Instagram with the June hashtag

Half Term is over and it's back to school and work. The weather has kept us on our toes, beautiful sunshine one minute and torrential downpours the next. I hope you've all had a creative May. Do you have a craft project or two planned for June? If you enjoy sharing your creative life on Instagram, then please feel free to tag as many crafty images with #craftingismytherapy_june throughout the month.

All crafts more than welcome. At the end of the month, I will choose some of the images that have caught my eye and put together a round-up post over on Instagram and here on my blog. You can find my Instagram here. I also share as many of your images in my Insta stories as I can throughout June.

How to make festive pom pom robins

I wanted to share a step-by-step guide to making these cute pom pom robins.
Perfect for the festive season.
Once you've got the hang of it, you'll want to make loads.

tutorial for handmade pom pom robins

When I was growing up, each year our Christmas decorations were bought out of the loft. My Mum would display her own handmade pom pom robins in pride of place on the mantlepiece. My Mum's robins are now over forty years old, they still come out every year, but I thought it was about time I made my own set.

They are easy to make once you get the hang of the wool layering. Once you've mastered that, you are set to make a whole family of these super cute pom pom robins.

supplies needed to make pom pom robins

You will need:
* Wool in red, white and brown
* Cardboard, empty cereal packets are ideal.
* Scissors
* Felt in black and yellow
* Pipecleaners in yellow or white
* Glue

To start with you need to create your cardboard 'doughnut' shapes. I prefer to use the old school method of making pom poms with cardboard hoops. I know there are all sorts of pom pom makers on the market these days. But this is my preferred way of making all my pom poms.

It's up to you how big or small you make the robins. I usually draw round a large mug and for the inner circle use an egg cup or similar. As you wind the wool round, you want the inner circle to be virtually full. This will give you a nice, dense pom pom.

brown, red and white yarn

I usually like to create a few spools of wool in the shades required for these projects. You need to wind them into these narrow cylinder shapes so that you can thread them through the central hole.

Now you can begin to layer up the wool. First start with a layer of red in top section of your cardboard hoop. I usually wind round at least four or five layers of red.

using old school pom pom making method

Now for the white. Tie on your wool to the left of the red section.
You need to build up a layer of white wool to left of the red. Start winding the wool about 1cm away from the red.
Make sure the 1cm section of white wool is the same depth as red wool.
Carry on winding white wool over the top of red section to create a thin layer of white.
Then do the same on right hand side by layering up another 1cm section of white wool to match depth of the red.
See image below to give clearer idea of technique.

layering up wool to create pom pom robins

Now you need to start adding the brown wool to the bare section of the hoop at the bottom.
You need to build the brown layer up to match the red and white section.

layering up brown wool to make pom pom robins

Once you have wound the brown wool round to the same depth, you need to extend the brown wool layer over the top of white section.
If you want a nice fluffy pom pom, keep winding brown wool around until white layer can no longer be seen.

making pom pom robins

Once the central hole is nearly full, you can stop layering up the wool.
Now it's time to cut the wool off the cardboard hoops.
This is my favourite part of making pom poms.
Part the wool carefully so that you expose the cardboard beneath.
Carefully slide the scissors between the two cardboard hoops and start cutting the wool.

how to make pom poms using cardboard hoops

Once you have cut all the way around, don't take the cardboard hoops off. They will help to hold the wool apart for the tying off part. Take a length of brown wool and wrap it round your pom pom, tie off securely with one or two knots.

tying off wool around a pom pom

Once the pom pom is secured with a length of wool, you can add the pipe cleaner to create its feet.
Wrap the pipe cleaner around and then twist it once to secure.
You want this twisted bit to be located towards the bottom of the red section (see photo).
This means his feet can be created under the red breast section to help it stand up.

adding pipe cleaner legs to pom pom robins

Once the pipe cleaner is secured, you can take the cardboard hoops off. You may need to carefully cut them off, but they should slide off.
To finish off the pom pom, you can give it a trim to make a nice round shape.
Bend the pipe cleaner around to create two little feet.

trimming handmade pom pom

To complete your pom pom robin, cut out a diamond shape in the yellow felt to make the beak.
Then cut out two small circles in the black felt to create their eyes.
Put a small amount of glue on the felt eyes and attach to robin's face.
Fold over the diamond and glue onto the pom pom.

Your pom pom robin is now complete, doesn't it look sweet?

Now you can make as many festive pom pom robins as you like.
Why not try experimenting with different thicknesses of wool.
The one on the left in the picture below had a layer of very chunky brown wool added and he's turned out very plump indeed...

I hope you enjoy making some of your own and I would love to hear if you've made any.
Please feel free to share my images, but credit me if you do so.

Create an Autumn embroidery hoop using fishbone stitch

I love all the Autumnal colours that start to appear at this time of year. I decided to create an Autumn themed embroidery hoop using Fishbone Stitch to represent falling leaves.

falling autumn leaves created using fishbone stitch

Fishbone Stitch is great for creating leaves or feathers. There are lots of tutorials on the internet, I suggest searching youtube for a video to help give you a visual step-by-step guide. If you've never tried this stitch before, practise on some scrap fabric first. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but once I did...I fell in love with Fishbone Stitch.

I started this hoop by using pencil to sketch onto linen fabric a number of teardrop shapes. These will make up the falling leaves pattern. When stitching Fishbone, I like to also draw a central line down the middle of the teardrop to help guide me. I find this central line helps me to create a neater shape.

I drew 12 teardrop shapes in various sizes, but you could add more or less depending on your hoop size. I then selected a number of threads in Autumnal shades, such as mustard yellow, crimson red, warm orange and russet brown. I could then begin to create the Fishbone Stitch.

I found this was the sort of project I could dip into now and again, adding a leaf or two in the evening once my daughter had gone to bed. Once the Fishbone stage was complete, I added two small backstitches in dark brown thread at the base of each teardrop to create a leaf stalk effect.

What do you think?I am really pleased with the way it has turned out.
I've had a great response & lots of lovely comments on this piece over on my Instagram feed...
I think it is a simple but effective hoop to create on these darker evenings.

Crafting is my Therapy #11 and Giveaway

Welcome to the eleventh “Crafting is my Therapy” monthly blog link-up.
I hope you’ve had a wonderful month of making and creating.

selection of crafts related to crafting is my therapy blog linky

December will be the last time we host the “Crafting is my Therapy” linky for a little while. I am currently spinning lots of plates at the moment. I started my ‘Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools’ training course in September and it takes up lots of my time. Bearing in mind I haven’t written an essay for over twenty years, starting this course has been a shock to the system. I feel like I’m drowning in coursework! Alongside working part time and life in general, something has to give. Unfortunately, I have to cut back on the time I spend on my blog. Hopefully this is just a pause for ‘Crafting is my Therapy’ and not a final goodbye :)

I’ve enjoyed seeing all your crafty posts and I’ve discovered some amazing new blogs over the past few months of hosting the linky. A big thank you to Elsie Pop, Relentlessly Purple, Zeens and Roger, Growing Family, The Messy Brunette, Hillview Embroidery and Suzy Homemaker for linking up last month. A big thank you to all of you for supporting our linky in 2016, we appreciate each and every one of your retweets and link-backs!

Because we love seeing the projects you are working on, Jennifer and myself would love to keep our little community connected. We’ve decided to launch an Instagram hashtag. Each month it will change to reflect the month we’re in. This month it will be - #craftingismytherapy_december

I know lots of you have beautiful Instagram accounts and I love the supportive nature of the creative community over there. Please feel free to tag as many crafty images with #craftingismytherapy_december throughout the month. At the end of the month, Jennifer and I will choose our favourite images and put together a round-up post over on Instagram. You can find my Instagram here

Looking back at my craft projects in 2016

I started 2016 determined to be more creative. I wrote a post in January about wanting to overcome negative thoughts. One way to create more positivity in my life was to pick up my needle and thread and get sewing again. I find hand stitching relaxing, yet over the past few years I rarely make time for it...

I was inspired by an Anne Lamott quote I had seen on the Story of Mum Facebook page. It talked about embracing a 'big, juicy creative life'. Who wouldn't want to do that?!

For me, hand sewing is a form of mindfulness. I find concentrating on the stitches helps me to focus on the moment. I also like the sense of accomplishment when I reach the end of a sewing project. I run my fingers over the stitches and feel proud of my handiwork. Once one project is complete, my mind jumps to the next idea. It's definitely an outlet for my creativity.

In 2016 I wanted to aim to create at least one sewing project a month. I also wanted to blog about my creations and encourage others to make more time for creativity - our 'Crafting is my Therapy" blog link-up was born.

Now we're heading into December and 2016 is coming to a close, I wanted to look back at the sewing projects I've created over the past twelve months. I know my crafting output isn't huge, one look at Pinterest or Instagram shows me that some people create vast amounts of embroidery and crochet. I love admiring it though and you can't really compare yourself to others. The hand embroidery I've created has given me lots of pleasure, so that's all that matters...

I kicked off 2016 creating my "Sewing Mends the Soul hoop pictured at the top of this post...

February's Craft Project was inspired by the Beatles lyrics "Love Is All you Need".

In March I blogged about my vintage fabric applique rabbit hoop.

I also created a post in March about Learning new embroidery stitches

In May I put together a blog post about "It's cool to be kind: why we should value carers". This is a subject I feel strongly about as my husband and I are both support workers. This was one of my most popular posts of the year and I had lots of positive comments and reaction to the post.

My project for June was chain stitch spirals and french knots. I discovered the joys of sewing onto a favourite piece of vintage fabric...

In July I made a hand embroidered butterfly hoop. I think July's project is the one I'm most proud of...it combines stitches I had never tried before until this year.

In August I didn't sew a single stitch. The school holidays got the better of me I'm afraid...I did create this 'Sewing is my Therapy' hoop back in June, so I'll add it in here.

In September I wanted to learn more new stitches. So I had a go at learning ribbed web and lazy daisy stitch.

October and November have seen me return to my favourite past time of embellishing vintage fabric. Again, it is a great way to practice some of the new stitches I have learnt in 2016.

I hope you're enjoyed the review of my craft projects in 2016. I would love to know what you've been creating this year and if you've learnt any new crafty skills.

I will be linking up to December's "Crafting is my Therapy" with this post. December's link-up will be the last one we're hosting for a little while. There will be more details about a new Instagram community to replace the linky whilst I take a break from blogging. More details can be found in Friday's post when #craftingismytherapy goes live...
